Guest Katie Williams & Giveaway!

The Space Between Trees
Author: Katie Williams
Publisher: Chronicle Books

Hello Everyone!

Today I have the honor of having Author, Katie Williams here at Park Avenue Princess as part of the official blog tour for her debut book, "The Space Between Trees"! You can find my review here. I don't want to take too much time with the introduction (we all know how I love to talk), so I'm going to lend my throne, tiara, and whatever else Katie needs here in the castle to make her feel at home. I'm now going to let Katie speak to you about her phenomenal new book.  Please make her feel welcome!

A Very Bad Princess

Once upon a time there was a plain peasant girl—scuffs on her shoes, dirt under her fingernails—who was invited to sit on the princess’s throne for an entire day. That’s me, Katie Williams, scepter in hand, feeling atypically regal since our highness has invited me here to tell you about my debut novel, The Space Between Trees.

The Space Between Trees doesn’t have any princesses in it, no castles or charging steeds, nary a fairy godmother to be seen. But, like many good fairytales, it features a girl who has been overlooked.

Sixteen-year-old Evie somehow missed out on making friends, real friends anyway. She doesn’t have a boyfriend either, although she’s convinced the girls at school that she’s involved in a flourishing romance with college dropout Jonah Luks. Still, try as she might, she remains lonely, quirky, and anonymous. But all that changes when Evie spies the police pulling a murdered schoolmate’s body from the woods behind her paper route, and suddenly she’s at the center of the story everyone wants to hear. Eager for attention, Evie exaggerates her connection the dead girl, thereby drawing herself into a wrongheaded murder “investigation” that questions truth and fiction, innocence and guilt.

Perched here on my borrowed throne, I can’t help but think about princesses, and how being a princess is not about the sparkling tiaras and drool-worthy gowns (well, maybe it’s a little bit about the gowns), but is really about being kind and virtuous. After all, Cinderella was a princess on the inside way before she got the fairy-godmother makeover. By such standards, my protagonist Evie is very unprincesslike. She lies; she manipulates; she connives. And her machinations lead to serious trouble and permanent loss.

Does Evie sound like a horrible person to you? She makes some huge mistakes; it’s true. So how could I write a character who behaves so very badly? Well, I liked Evie because, despite her flaws, she was interested in the world around her and, also, she was daring. She’d do things I never would, even if some of those things were the wrong things. Furthermore, I understood Evie. Her bad behavior came from the same desires that make the princess character such an appealing fantasy: She wanted to feel special, pretty, and most of all, loved. And once I understood Evie better, I felt I could write more of her story to see where her lies led, to discover if she would eventually accept her rags and discover the secret that all true princesses know: She is special because she is herself.

You can read more about The Space Between Trees, including the first chapter, on my website, http://www.katiewilliamsbooks.com/.

Thank you SO much Katie for being here at the castle today! As a special surprise, Katie is offering one of my *Very Lucky* Loyal & Royal Readers a chance to WIN their very own AUTOGRAPHED Hardcover Copy of "The Space Between Trees"!

I culdn't be more excited to be part of E. Lockhart's tour!  And being the last stop, I will show you ALL of the new covers to the Ruby Oliver books, which were shown one at a time throughout the week on the other stops! Even though they've gone by, there will be a list at the bottom of this post so that you can stop by and show E. Lockhart and the other wonderful ladies that worked on this tour some serious love!  I also have a guest post written by E. Lockhart herself!

If you haven't read the Ruby Oliver Books, Which are "The Boyfriend List", "The Boy Book" and "The Treausre Map of Boys".  E. Lockhart has one more book coming out December 2010 which will be wrapping it all up called "Real Live Boyfriends"!  I can't wait for that one! This series is on of my very favorites!  At the end of E. Lockhart's Guest Post, One Lucky Reader will have the chance to win the first three Ruby Oliver books in this series!

In case you didn't know, Ruby herself has a Column over at Random Buzzers called "Dear Ruby" where she gives expert answers to a variety of questions!  If you have a question for Ruby, yourself, you can submit it HERE!

When I was approached by Random House to be part of this tour I was thrilled and then when I found out that I was going to be hosting a 'Guest Post' from E. Lockhart, I nearly fainted! Wait until you hear what she had to say! She actually has read *MY* Blog, *MY* Posts! What an honor!  Without further hesitation, I'm going to give E. the floor...

Hello. E. Lockhart here!

I was reading Jennifer Jabaley's Park Avenue Princess post about Lipstick Apology and she talks about asking herself: what's the worst thing that could happen?

I ask myself that, too, when I'm writing -- and especially when I was writing The Boyfriend List, the first in my "Ruby Oliver" series that goes on with The Boy Book and The Treasure Map of Boys -- and next year, Real Live Boyfriends.

In The Boyfriend List, 15 year-old Ruby Oliver has it pretty good. She goes to a Seattle Prep school, has a great best friend (Kim) and a group of other friends -- plus her first real boyfriend, Jackson.

What's the worst thing that could happen?
Jackson dumps her.

No, what's REALLY the worst thing that could happen?
Jackson dumps her for Kim.
Ruby loses her boyfriend and her best friend all at once.

Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
She wants to get him back, and she kisses him when Kim is out of town. She gets caught.
Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
The person who catches her -- tells. Everyone.
Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
Ruby's remaining friends side with Kim and dump her.

Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
She begins to have panic attacks.
Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
Her parents send her to a shrink. She doesn't want to talk to the shrink, and is so silent, in fact, that the therapist tries giving her a homework assignment: write a list of every boy you've ever liked, loved, gazed at, crushed on, held hands with. All the way back to Kindergarten. So Ruby does the homework. Makes the list.
Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
She throws her rough draft of the list in the trash -- at school.

Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
Someone finds it.
Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
Someone xeroxes it.

Then what's the worst thing that could happen?
The names of the boys? ordinary names like Mike, Steve, Scott, John? Look like names of boys at school. And it looks like a list of boys that Ruby has BEEN WITH. Now Ruby has no boyfriend, no friends, and a seriously sucky reputation.

The story of her triumph over this catastrophe takes four books. With footnotes!
It has been very, very fun to put Ruby through all this horror.

E. Lockhart

E.! I am SHOCKED and I LOVED every minute of it! So will you! The Ruby Oliver books are some of the best written, true-to-life, and fun books that I've ever read! Thank you E. Lockhart for visiting Park-Avenue Princess! I'd LOVE to have you back anytime!

Now, if you LOVE the Ruby Oliver Series, or you've never read a single book here's a FANTASTIC opportunity! One Lucky Reader will get ALL Three of the Ruby Oliver books that are currently out and shipped to them directly from Random House! (This means U.S. Resident's only for this one).

Yet how can he deny the passion that burns between him and Arabella, and ruin the one woman who touches his very soul?

Author Bio:

Sue-Ellen Welfonder is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.

Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.

Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.

Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.
