Token of Darkness
By: Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
Publisher - Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Pages - 208
Level - YA
Giveaway - Five Copies

About the Book -

Cooper Blake has everything going for him—until he wakes from a car accident with his football career in ruins and a mysterious, attractive girl by his side. Cooper doesn’t know how Samantha got there or why he can see her; all he knows is that she’s a ghost, and the shadows that surround her seem intent on destroying her.

No one from Cooper’s old life would understand what he can barely grasp himself. . . . But Delilah, the captain of the cheerleading squad, has secrets of her own, like her ability to see beyond the physical world, and her tangled history with Brent, a loner from a neighboring school who can hear strangers’ most intimate thoughts. Delilah and Brent know that Cooper is in more trouble than he realizes, and that Samantha may not be as innocent as she has led Cooper to believe. But the only way to figure out where Samantha came from will put them all in more danger than they ever dreamed possible.

Do stop by if you'd like to ask her any questions!  Without futher ado, Please make Amelia Feel Welcome!

Amelia Atwater-Rhodes Guest Post

I signed my first publishing contract when I was fourteen; I wrote my first complete novel when I was ten. I graduated high school, undergraduate and graduate school, went to Texas for a semester, have frequently worked full time, and maintain both a social- and love-life, all while continuing to write and publish. So it is not surprising that one of the questions I am most frequently asked is, “How do you do it all?”

I wrote Token of Darkness in November, 2007. At the time, I was a full-time student at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. I wrote the rough draft in 30 days as part of National Novel Writing Month (nanowrimo.org), which is part of the answer: I need pressure in order to get anything done. 50k in 30 days (the goal of NaNo) is possible for me. I couldn’t do it every month, because I need to maintain the other parts of my life, but I can rise to the challenge of a goal and the friendly competition of NaNo.

What I cannot do is ever get anything done when I have too much time. Summer has always been a difficult time for me, because I tend to be under-scheduled once school lets out (and I am not really a fan of heat and humidity unless I am on vacation with a pool or the beach nearby). If I work out a schedule to organize what needs to be done in a logical form that eliminates stress, I will violate the schedule, or add something to it; too much time kills my inspiration, which tends to come up when I am moving quickly, tackling difficult tasks, problem-solving, or moving from point A to point B in the moments between work. I tend to solve plot problems in the car between appointments, not when I actually sit down to focus on them.

It is only recently that I have ever created a schedule or established a specific time for writing. In January, I started a job that I hope to turn into a long-term career. My fiancée and I have also been in the process of buying a house and planning our wedding, and I have finally discovered what might be my limit for how much I can do at one time: full time job, plus writing, plus editing, plus graduate class, plus wedding and house-buying plans. Apparently that combination is difficult (go figure), so I decided I needed to make some kind of plan to ensure I did not lose my writing focus while developing other parts of my life. I have set up 5:30 to 6:30 in the morning as a time for writing projects. This schedule has worked for me since the beginning of January- the trick is to make the coffee and start work before I am awake enough to wonder why I am awake at five in the morning- and I hope I can hold onto it as time moves on, especially as summer months arrive.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Harper Teen's 28 Days of Winter Escapes - Day 8 Carolyn Mackler

I am honored to be asked by  HARPER TEEN to be a part of their "28 Days of Winter Escapes"! Each day in February, Harper Teen is having a different blogger post Q&A's by a specific author and a chance to win a signed book by answering a poll on different subjects (Today's Poll is on How You Like to Flirt!)! That equals One book a day for 28 days! You can read all about the "28 Days of Winter Escapes" in my post below!

Today is day 8 and I have the pleasure of hosting a Question and Answer Session with Carolyn Mackler author of "TANGLED", which I loved and was even reviewed right here on Park-Avenue Princess!  When you are done reading the Questions and Answers, don't forget to go over and answer the poll!  You may win that day's signed book! Also, Harper Teen is offering up a bigger prize of an Ipod, but which day is not known, so it's important to check back every single day and answer each poll for a chance at the big prize! Thank you Harper Teen!

Please make Carolyn Mackler feel welcome!

1. Jena collects “other people’s musings” about love and heartbreak. What’s your favorite quotation about love?

“ ‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” —Alfred Lord Tennyson

I like that quote because it’s about taking risks and really letting yourself live, even if it can hurt sometimes. I just Googled the quote and found this rant on a blog where someone wrote, “It is better to have loved and lost than to have spent the rest of my life with that psycho!” I have to admit, that’s a pretty perfect quote, too.

2. If you were a character in Tangled, who would you be most likely to offer advice to: Jena, Skye, Dakota, or Owen?

Hmmm. . . good question. I think Jena, despite her dark moments, has a decent amount of emotional grounding. Skye, by the end, has a therapist. Owen has his sense of humor to get him through. So I suppose I would give advice to Dakota. He seems so stranded in the world. That’s why I was relieved when he encountered Shasta. I’m hoping this is just the beginning of their story together.

3. Who are three people that you’re inextricably tangled with, and how have they affected your life?

My immediate reaction is my husband, my five-year-old son, and my infant son. We’re tangled together in that wonderful, messy, loving way where one person is brushing their teeth while the other is in the shower and the other is knocking on the door shouting that they need the bathroom and the other is grumbling because his pacifier fell out. But then I think about what tangled with people means to me. It’s those people who keep circling around in my life, who keep showing up—physically or even in memories—and affecting the course of things. By that definition, I’d say my best friend from childhood, my best friend from college, and the first guy I fell in love with. Even though all three of them aren’t in my day-to-day life, they are so much a part of who I am today.

4. Ever had a chance encounter that led to something special?

Yes, definitely. I did a lot of travelling when I was in college—biking around Europe with a friend, driving cross-country by myself—and I had some seriously amazing chance encounters. Subtext: met extremely cute, smart, interesting guys. There’s nothing like travel, being in a new place and feeling a bit liberated from who you are back home. When I was a teenager, I always felt like even my hair looked better when I traveled. Or maybe it was just the moisture of a more humid climate.

5. Where is paradise for you?

Someplace warm, like the Caribbean, with good swimming. And I have to be able to walk barefoot. When I was growing up, my grandparents lived in the Caribbean, in a house with lime trees and lizards scurrying up the walls. We used to visit them every winter, escaping the frozen tundra of western New York. Definitely paradise!

6. What book would you read on winter’s day?

Last winter, I read Sarah Conley by Ellen Gilchrist and I loved it. It’s just the right blend of happy and sad, heartbreaking and uplifting. Not to mention that Ellen Gilchrist is a pro—I felt like I was in great hands reading her story. I think I’ll read it again this winter. And there’s even a huge snowstorm in the beginning!

7. Do you believe in happily ever after?

Yes. Well, actually, I believe in happy-ever-after-with-some-work-and-some-good-luck-and-occasional-bumps-that-must-be-taken-with-a-dose-of-humor. It’s certainly not all happy, but a lot of it can be. And as for the bad stuff, you have to find someone who can laugh about it with you.

8. What makes something romantic?

With the right people, anything can be romantic, even being stranded on a runway for eighteen hours, as my husband and I were en route to our honeymoon. And with the wrong person, all the candlelight and French restaurants in the world can’t add up to romance.

9. What’s your favorite winter activity?

Sledding with my son in Riverside Park. There’s this huge hill near our apartment and he’s just starting to do the mini-ramps. I love running up and down the hill and watching him whiz by, pure glee on his little face.

10. Opposites attract or repel?

It depends on what kind of opposites. My husband and I are different in a lot of ways—like he loves having music on and I need quiet. Or he’ll devour a steak and I’m a lifelong vegetarian. These are the kinds of differences that make life interesting. But on a deep level, like what we believe in and how we view the world, we are similar. I suppose if I met my true opposite, in a worldview sort of way, I wouldn’t be enamored.

Thank you SO much for being here Carolyn! If you haven't picked up TANGLED yet, I highly recommend you do!

Head on over to Harper Teen's 28 Days of Winter of Escapes - Day 8 and take the Poll to win!

Saturday Spotlight and a Giveaway!

Shhhh.... I know! I know! It's "technically" Sunday.  But, I figured that since we turned back the clocks, maybe, just maybe, I could get away with it!  Sneaky... huh?

Well here we are again! Finally! A new Sunday...um, SATURDAY SPOTLIGHT!  And look who we have instore for you this week!

And what shall we call you?  Ya' know...what's your name? I like to surround myself with a glamour of mystery... ;)

*Nods head*  That's why you're here...right?  You're surrounding yourself with glamour! *giggles* Get it! Get it? Me.... Me... *ha ha ha*  Glam...o..ur...  Ok... Next!

Alias? Zombie Girrrl! I'd been known as "21," but adopted the new moniker from Taschima of Bloody Bookaholic after I left a rather lengthy and passionate rant on the many uses of zombies in literature. She kinda gave me my online identity.

Very chic! Spooky! I likey!

Your blog name? Crackin' Spines & Takin' Names. I changed it for Zombie Appreciation Week, though, to Crackin' Spines & Takin' Brains. Me so clever. =9

Oh... that YOU are!  *wink*
Crackin' Spines? *giggles*   Get it?  Crack...   *ahem*

And where can we find this FABU Blog? http://crackinspines.blogspot.com/

Well? Go take a peek...  Yeah! I'll Wait!

Alright. They're back! How about a "Quickie Bio"?  I’ve always felt that biographies were for successful people, but I’ll give it a shot anyway!

I’m a military brat, so I’ve moved around a lot, and have the bragging right of having lived on all three coasts. I didn’t get into reading until my early teens, mostly because I didn’t like sitting still (still don’t), but now I love “traveling” with books. That sounds lame, but that’s how it is! Books feed my imagination and fuel my daydreams. Also, they’re the only friends that never get left behind (bar some disastrous packing accident). They’ve always been the first things out of the box, and I never travel without four or five of them.

Why did you start your blog? I started my blog after seeing how many new books my friends were finding through fellow bloggers, I wanted in! I came for the books, but I stay for the people! I’ve met a ton of nice people, and there’s always something going on!

Amen to that!

What is your favorite genre and/or genres? It’d be quicker to tell you what I don’t like!

*Well by all means then...it is YOUR show, right?* SPILL IT!

I like fiction and non-fiction (LOVE reading about the 1918 flu pandemic!), but I basically only read YA fiction because it’s easier to avoid smut (I hate smut!). I love supernatural, paranormal, and fantasy; although I do like the occasional contemporary fiction too, like An Abundance of Katherines.

Who is your favorite author? Ooh, hard! I have a favorite author for every genre, subgenre, and day of the week! Tamora Pierce is my fallback, though. Her Tortall books never disappoint, and I’ve been reading her stuff faithfully since I was thirteen. Her sheroes (Literally she-heroes, her word, not mine. “Heroine” is too druggy, even with the extra e.)  kick butt!

"Butt" Kicking is ALWAYS Good...  Did you say 13?

What is your favorite book of all time? That is probably the hardest question ever conceived by man.  *Note: I am a Woman * Fiction would be World War Z by Max Brooks. Non-fiction, Flu by Gina Kolata. YA fiction… that’s too hard to answer. There’s so much good stuff! Too much! No, wait, there’s no such thing as too many good books!

Describe your review system: My review system is highly scientific. I read a book, decide how much danger I’d risk to get at that book, then I assign it a rating from 1 to 5 zombies. I really admire people who can break a book down to its constituent parts and rate every individual aspect of a book, but I haven’t been able to come up with my own detailed system, so for now, zombies it is!

And Zombies...Rock!

How is your blog unique from other blogs? Well, it’s the only place in the known universe where you can read what I think about books. Haha. One thing that sets me apart from other bloggers is my footnotes. I include my deeper or unrelated thoughts on things in footnotes at the end of most posts. It works out for me because my mind tends to wander, which leads to rambling and a lack of clarity. Plus, they’re fun to do!

How do you market your blog? I haven't really marketed my blog, per se. I've posted a link to it on my Shelfari page and linked my IMM posts on The Story Siren, but this is the first actual promotion I’ve ever done. I’ve been a bit of a chicken-butt in that department.

tsk tsk... "chicken butt" (Note: Lots of  "butt" and "zombie" talk) ..

Can you give us three tips about content? Be honest. Be kind. Be yourself! You can give a poor review without tearing the book or writer down, and the most interesting blogs are the ones where you really get a feel for what the blogger is like through their writing.

Great Advice!

Can you give three tips about blog promotion? Look out for blogs that promote their fellows and inquire into being included, don’t snag people’s email addresses for the purpose of advertising (very poor internetiquette), and be patient.

Patience is a Virtue...

Thank you for being here Zombie Girl! Oh and Guess what "Chicken Butt"?  I love you and your blog!  *giggles*  (I crack myself up)!

OK! Now that you've got to know Zombie Girl, she's been kind enough to offer a really Awesome Giveaway!  Are you ready?!?

I knew you were!

Van Lowe, will be writing a novella entitled "I Want You Back" and posting it on his website!  Mr. Van Lowe describes "I Want You Back" as a "funny, thrilling paranormal ya novella" and after reading a bit of it myself, I couldn't agree more.

To get the novella, all you have to do is subscribe to E. VanLowe's website! After that, you'll be notified everytime a new chapter is posted.  One to two chapters per week with it being at least 10 chapers long!   This project is being done by Mr. Van Lowe as a 'Thank You' to his fans and friends that have supported "Never Slow Dance With A Zombie"!  All artwork is being done by the very talented Tatiana El-Khouri, who has designed all the artwork for his shirts and web pages!  (and all of those are beyond adorable so I really can't wait to see what she comes up with for "I Want You Back")  The title work for this project above is an excellent example.  Tatiana's Web Page can be found HERE.  Stop by, check out her work and show her page a little love as well.  She's really nice and did I mention talented?  I absolutely LOVED "Never Slow Dance With A Zombie".  It was one of my favorites this year!  This is only one of the reasons I'm extremely excited about this new novella!  Mr. Van Lowe is an amazing writer and a wonderful storyteller so this project is sure to be another great read!  I'm already waiting for more!

It's absolutely FREE to subscribe and as I stated above, once you do subscribe, you'll be notified of each and every new chapter!  You can do that by going HERE!  So, if you love Thrillers, YA, or anything Paranormal, I really suggest that you give it a try!

I saved The BEST for last!  I have a sample of what you'll be getting with "I Want You Back"!  Are you ready?

I Want You Back

When we meet our 16 year old protagonist, Emy, she tells us:

To begin with, I’m not a nice girl. Don’t get me wrong, I used to be a nice girl. I used to be kind, and helpful, considerate and thoughtful. The kind of girl who went to all of her boyfriend’s games, even though she hates basketball; the kind of girl who helped her boyfriend study for his English final while she should have been studying for her own calculus final—and maybe she would have done better than that C; the kind of girl the boys at school lovingly call, oh, what’s that cute little name they have for us again? Oh, yes—Doormat.

I Want You Back is the story of 16 year-old, Emy Grant, who uses magic to ensnare the boy of her dreams.

I, personally, can't wait to find out more about Emy and what she has instore for us!  Thank you Mr. Van Lowe for sharing this project with us!  I wish you all the best and nothing but continued success!

If you have any questions for Mr. Van Lowe, please feel free to post them in the comments and I'm sure he'll be more than happy to answer them!  If you have a question, but you feel uncomfortable leaving it in the comments section, you can send it to me directly through the 'contact' page and I'll be sure to pass it on!  I have some important links for all of you that are interested.  I'm going to list them below.  All you have to do is click and enjoy!

By: Sue-Ellen Welfonder
Publisher: Forever
Available: 10/1/2009
Category: Fiction/Romance
ISBN: 9780446195300
Pages: 400

About the Book:

Darroc MacConacher spends sleepless nights dreaming of a raven-haired beauty who makes him ache with desire. Then his dream comes true: the lady with her lush curves and fair skin appears shipwrecked on his shores. Darroc is immediately drawn to her strength and beauty, and from the moment she lays eyes on this powerful, broad-shouldered warrior, Lady Arabella MacKenzie knows she'll never want another man.

But theirs is a forbidden love. The MacKenzies drove the MacConachers from their lands and destroyed their honor. Now, Darroc can use this sapphire-eyed seductress to shatter his foes. Yet how can he deny the passion that burns between him and Arabella, and ruin the one woman who touches his very soul?

Author Bio:

Sue-Ellen Welfonder is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.

Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.

Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.

Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.
