The Blue Star by Tony Earley GIVEAWAY!!

The Blue Star
Tony Earley
Publisher - Back Bay Books
Available August 2009
Paperback (Reprint)
Pages - 336

About the Book:
Seven years ago, readers everywhere fell in love with Jim Glass, the precocious ten-year-old at the heart of Tony Earley's bestseller Jim the Boy. Now a teenager, Jim returns in another tender and wise story of young love on the eve of World War Two.

Jim Glass has fallen in love, as only a teenage boy can fall in love, with his classmate Chrissie Steppe. Unfortunately, Chrissie is Bucky Bucklaw's girlfriend, and Bucky has joined the Navy on the eve of war. Jim vows to win Chrissie's heart in his absence, but the war makes high school less than a safe haven, and gives a young man's emotions a grown man's gravity.

With the uncanny insight into the well-intentioned heart that made Jim the Boy a favorite novel for thousands of readers, Tony Earley has fashioned another nuanced and unforgettable portrait of America in another time--making it again even realer than our own day.

This is a timeless and moving story of discovery, loss and growing up, proving why Tony Earley's writing "radiates with a largeness of heart" (Esquire).

About Tony Earley

Tony Earley is the author of four books: Here We Are in Paradise, a collection of stories; the novel Jim the Boy; the personal essay collection Somehow Form a Family; and The Blue Star, a novel released in Spring, 2008. A winner of a National Magazine Award for fiction, he was named one of the twenty best writers of his generation by both Granta, in 1996, and The New Yorker in 1999. His fiction and/or nonfiction have appeared in Harper's, Esquire, The New Yorker, The Oxford American, The New York Times Book Review, Tin House, Best American Short Stories, New Stories from the South and many other magazines and anthologies.

He is a native of western North Carolina and a graduate of Warren Wilson College and The University of Alabama. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife and daughter, where he is the Samuel Milton Fleming Associate Professor of English at Vanderbilt University.

Miche Bag Review & Giveaway!!

Miche (pronounced “MEE-chee”) is sold all over the United States, as well as, in more than 10 different countries around the world! The bags and shells are now available at stores, boutiques, through purse parties and online!

What woman doesn't NEED a Miche bag? Think about it...ONE bag that creates SEVERAL looks! Fabulous idea, right? That's what I thought the very first time I saw the bag and I couldn't wait to try it out for myself. Thanks to the wonderful people at Miche, I got to review this bag with the interchangeable shells!

Photobucket

You want to know what I think? I think it's AMAZING! I can change my bag when I change my outfit in a matter of seconds. What's best is that I don't have to take everything out of my bag and put it into another one just to match! I simply change the shell! Want to see how it works? Just watch:

Here's a little bit behind the bag:
(from the press release)

It’s a business story most of us only dream about. In the fall of 2004 29-year-old Michelle Romero was a young, recently married dental assistant who was trying to figure out what to do with her life. During her lunch break one day she did something many women have done, only for Michelle it started a series of events that would change her life.

Michelle is the founder of Miche Bag, the brand that created the wildly popular interchangeable handbag. Michelle came up with the concept after spilling on the outside of her favorite bag. The resulting stain left her frustrated that she would have to replace “the perfect bag”. That sparked an idea. What if you could just replace the outside of a purse without taking everything out of your bag? Michelle created a rough prototype and enlisted the help of a friend and confidante, Annette Cavaness. Together they started the process of building a business.

Photobucket

Today, Utah based, Miche Bag is experiencing record-setting growth. With nearly 100 different styles of outer shells to choose from Miche Bag is sold in more than 10 countries around the world. The company is focused on helping other moms generate income for their families through at-home parties, where most of the purses are sold. Miche Bag is also sold online and in select retail locations.

Photobucket

Michelle has two children under the age of 3. Annette is a mom to three kids; ages 5, 3, and 1. She is in the process of relocating to Germany to run the European operations for Miche Bag.

The Utah based Miche Company is responsible for this wildly popular handbag and it's even expanding it's look to go "slouchy". No longer are they just the sleek interchangeable shells (though they will still carry the classic bags), co-founder Michele Romero says, "These new slouchy shells give women the best of both worlds. A structured inside so you don't lose all of your contents in the mix, and a slouchy outside for a new trendy look that completely changes the look of the Miche Bag. It truly is one bag, endless possibilities!"

Photobucket

The Miche Bag is a simple, yet brilliant, concept. In a matter of seconds you can change the entire look and feel of your purse to match any outfit without ever moving the inside contents. Different shells attach seamlessly to the base bag using magnets to hold the shell in place. The new slouchy bag not only changes the color and texture of the bag, but the entire shape as well.

Damas, Dramas and Ana Ruiz Blog Tour & Giveaway!!

Damas, Dramas and Ana Ruiz: A Quinceañera Club Novel
By: Belinda Acosta
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Pages: 336 Pages
Available: August 11, 2009

My Rating: 4.5 Tiaras! Photobucket

Synopsis:

All Ana Ruiz wanted was to have a traditional quinceañera for her daughter, Carmen. She wanted a nice way to mark this milestone year in her daughter's life. But Carmen was not interested in celebrating. Hurt and bitter over her father Esteban's departure, she blamed Ana for destroying their happy family, as did everyone else. A good man is hard to find, especially at your age Ana was told. Why not forgive his one indiscretion? Despite everything, Ana didn't want to tarnish Carmen's childlike devotion to her beloved father. But Ana knows that growing up sometimes means facing hard truths. In the end, Ana discovers that if she's going to teach Carmen anything about what it means to be a woman, it will take more than simply a fancy party to do it...

"Belinda Acosta's Damas, Dramas, and Ana Ruiz delivers all its title promises and more: it's a book about damas of all ages, from teenage girls to the struggling mothers of those teenage girls; it's packed with drama so you don't want to stop reading; it's a novel that deeply and honestly tells the story of Ana Ruiz, her own coming of age as a woman and as a mother. Belinda Acosta is up to all of the challenges of such a rich panorama of characters and events. She's sassy, she's smart, she makes it look easy! But it takes a lot of hard work and a pile of talent to write such an engaging, touching book. A wonderful quinceañera of a novel!" --- Julia Alvarez, author of
Once Upon a Quinceañera: Coming of Age in the USA and Return to Sender"

Lively and perceptive... Acosta empathically captures the innermost feelings of her characters."--- Booklist

My thoughts:

What's a quinceañera? Before opening the book, that's something I needed to know! Here's what I found; It's a celebration or coming-of-age party held on a girl's fifteenth birthday that typically begins with a religious ceremony. This ceremony is usually a good way for the family to bond with the girl turning 15 (especially the mother).

When I first picked up Damas, Dramas and Ana Ruiz, I expected a humorous beach-type read with little sustenance. But, to my delight, I couldn't have been more wrong! Belinda Acosta does a wonderful job weaving a story of a heart-broken daughter who misses her father's love and a mother that will do anything to gain her daughter's heart back! Belinda uses a unique mixture of humor and narrative point of view to get the messages across to her readers. Which worked for me one hundred percent!

Carmen can only see all the goodness in her father and furthermore, she blames her fully for their immediate separation! A daddy's girl through-and-through she has only starry-eyed notions of just what type of a man he is. Her mother and father, Ana and Esteban Ruiz cannot even hold a civilized conversation, never mind connecting to try and figure out if and how the marriage is going to work! And while Carmen refuses to talk to her mother, Ana is determined to throw Carmen a beautiful Quinceañera with the hopes of bringing them closer together and strengthening their bond.

Most of the story is centered around Ana and her need to regain her own self-confidence along with her daughters love. Ana's Son Diego and her niece Bianca both are there to help with the planning. While Carmen shows her childish, immature and demanding self in this story, her brother is just the opposite. Diego is caring and compassionate and tries to help his mother with whatever she needs. Bianca's got her own mother/daughter issues. Her mother is mentally ill and therefore can't be there for her while she's growing up. Each one of these character's were so well developed that I felt as though I got to know each and every one of them. I cared about what happened to them. I laughed with them and I felt their pain. To me, that's one of the main things that makes a story a success.

I believe this book would make a fantastic book club read (and you can even find a RGG here)! There is so many aspects of this story you could discuss. Also, there are the different cultural aspects of the book that helped me learn a whole lot about a subject I didn't know much about to begin with. I was so angry at times with Ana for not telling her daughter the truth about her father. But, as a mother myself, I could see the struggle she had with trying to protect her daughter from all that wasn't "perfect" in the family. There are already so many different types of things that teen girls have to worry about while entering womanhood. Why add more stress?

Belinda has written a coming of age story and the issues that affect so many of us and not just Spanish families. You could feel the stress in the written word and just how strong the bond of love is between the Ruiz family. This story will at times tug at your heart-strings and at other times laugh out loud! I highly recommend this book and note Ms. Acosta an author to watch!
