Saturday Spotlight and a Giveaway!

Shhhh.... I know! I know! It's "technically" Sunday.  But, I figured that since we turned back the clocks, maybe, just maybe, I could get away with it!  Sneaky... huh?

Well here we are again! Finally! A new Sunday...um, SATURDAY SPOTLIGHT!  And look who we have instore for you this week!

And what shall we call you?  Ya' know...what's your name? I like to surround myself with a glamour of mystery... ;)

*Nods head*  That's why you're here...right?  You're surrounding yourself with glamour! *giggles* Get it! Get it? Me.... Me... *ha ha ha*  Glam...o..ur...  Ok... Next!

Alias? Zombie Girrrl! I'd been known as "21," but adopted the new moniker from Taschima of Bloody Bookaholic after I left a rather lengthy and passionate rant on the many uses of zombies in literature. She kinda gave me my online identity.

Very chic! Spooky! I likey!

Your blog name? Crackin' Spines & Takin' Names. I changed it for Zombie Appreciation Week, though, to Crackin' Spines & Takin' Brains. Me so clever. =9

Oh... that YOU are!  *wink*
Crackin' Spines? *giggles*   Get it?  Crack...   *ahem*

And where can we find this FABU Blog? http://crackinspines.blogspot.com/

Well? Go take a peek...  Yeah! I'll Wait!

Alright. They're back! How about a "Quickie Bio"?  I’ve always felt that biographies were for successful people, but I’ll give it a shot anyway!

I’m a military brat, so I’ve moved around a lot, and have the bragging right of having lived on all three coasts. I didn’t get into reading until my early teens, mostly because I didn’t like sitting still (still don’t), but now I love “traveling” with books. That sounds lame, but that’s how it is! Books feed my imagination and fuel my daydreams. Also, they’re the only friends that never get left behind (bar some disastrous packing accident). They’ve always been the first things out of the box, and I never travel without four or five of them.

Why did you start your blog? I started my blog after seeing how many new books my friends were finding through fellow bloggers, I wanted in! I came for the books, but I stay for the people! I’ve met a ton of nice people, and there’s always something going on!

Amen to that!

What is your favorite genre and/or genres? It’d be quicker to tell you what I don’t like!

*Well by all means then...it is YOUR show, right?* SPILL IT!

I like fiction and non-fiction (LOVE reading about the 1918 flu pandemic!), but I basically only read YA fiction because it’s easier to avoid smut (I hate smut!). I love supernatural, paranormal, and fantasy; although I do like the occasional contemporary fiction too, like An Abundance of Katherines.

Who is your favorite author? Ooh, hard! I have a favorite author for every genre, subgenre, and day of the week! Tamora Pierce is my fallback, though. Her Tortall books never disappoint, and I’ve been reading her stuff faithfully since I was thirteen. Her sheroes (Literally she-heroes, her word, not mine. “Heroine” is too druggy, even with the extra e.)  kick butt!

"Butt" Kicking is ALWAYS Good...  Did you say 13?

What is your favorite book of all time? That is probably the hardest question ever conceived by man.  *Note: I am a Woman * Fiction would be World War Z by Max Brooks. Non-fiction, Flu by Gina Kolata. YA fiction… that’s too hard to answer. There’s so much good stuff! Too much! No, wait, there’s no such thing as too many good books!

Describe your review system: My review system is highly scientific. I read a book, decide how much danger I’d risk to get at that book, then I assign it a rating from 1 to 5 zombies. I really admire people who can break a book down to its constituent parts and rate every individual aspect of a book, but I haven’t been able to come up with my own detailed system, so for now, zombies it is!

And Zombies...Rock!

How is your blog unique from other blogs? Well, it’s the only place in the known universe where you can read what I think about books. Haha. One thing that sets me apart from other bloggers is my footnotes. I include my deeper or unrelated thoughts on things in footnotes at the end of most posts. It works out for me because my mind tends to wander, which leads to rambling and a lack of clarity. Plus, they’re fun to do!

How do you market your blog? I haven't really marketed my blog, per se. I've posted a link to it on my Shelfari page and linked my IMM posts on The Story Siren, but this is the first actual promotion I’ve ever done. I’ve been a bit of a chicken-butt in that department.

tsk tsk... "chicken butt" (Note: Lots of  "butt" and "zombie" talk) ..

Can you give us three tips about content? Be honest. Be kind. Be yourself! You can give a poor review without tearing the book or writer down, and the most interesting blogs are the ones where you really get a feel for what the blogger is like through their writing.

Great Advice!

Can you give three tips about blog promotion? Look out for blogs that promote their fellows and inquire into being included, don’t snag people’s email addresses for the purpose of advertising (very poor internetiquette), and be patient.

Patience is a Virtue...

Thank you for being here Zombie Girl! Oh and Guess what "Chicken Butt"?  I love you and your blog!  *giggles*  (I crack myself up)!

OK! Now that you've got to know Zombie Girl, she's been kind enough to offer a really Awesome Giveaway!  Are you ready?!?

I knew you were!

I love to write. That's pretty much all I do. Ask my family about the undone laundry, the unbought groceries, and the fact that I rarely find time to get dressed in the morning. Actually, if you train your family right, they won't notice any of these things. "Popcorn for dinner again, Mom! Cool," say my filthy children. God bless them, they don't know what panty hose are. Oh, my poor husband. What else is there to know about me? I love kids. I love cats. I love chocolate (not necessarily in that order). And I love to hear from readers. About "How It Ends"
(taken from Laura's Web Site)

All Hanna's wanted since sophomore year is Seth. She's gone out with other guys, even gained a rep for being a flirt, all the while hoping cool, guitar-playing Seth will choose her. Then she gets him – but their relationship is hurtful, stormy and critical, not at all what Hanna thinks a perfect love should be.

Bewildered by Seth's treatment of her and in need of understanding, Hanna decides to fulfill her school's community service requirement by spending time with Helen, her terminally ill neighbor, who she's turned to for comfort and wisdom throughout her life. But illness has changed Helen into someone Hanna hardly knows, and her home is not the refuge it once was.

Feeling more alone than ever, Hanna gets drawn into an audio book the older woman is listening to, a fierce, unsettling love story of passion, sacrifice and devotion. Hanna's fascinated by the idea that such all-encompassing love can truly exist, and without even realizing it, the story begins to change her.

Until the day when the story becomes all too real...and Hanna's world is spun off its axis by its shattering irrevocable conclusion.

My thoughts:

Hannah is the apple of her neighbor Helen's eye. From a very young age she practically brought her up. Helen is much more than a neighbor to Hannah, she's more like a beloved grandmother. And so the story is set. Hannah is your typical teenager. She's fun, full of spunk, energy and most of all, kindness. Of course at times, you can see Hannah's rebellious side and angst. And as Hannah gets older and grows older, you can see that she's still Helen's whole world. Unfortunately, Hannah makes Seth the focus of hers. Hannah's determined to make Seth her very own, and we as readers. get to enjoy the laugh out loud memories of growing up and being in "love" with a boy!

Also, as with most teenagers, their time for the adults in their life becomes less and less as they try to venture out more and more on their own. I couldn't help but cheer on Hannah as she did the things that made her smile and then cry with a broken -heart of my very own when she was sad or lost. It's at this point of the story that we learn that Helen has a dark past and a very deep secret that she's kept from Hannah. It's breaking her heart to watch Hannah grow up distanced and now somewhat 'apart' from her. But yet she understands that the cycle of life usually takes this turn. It becomes Helen's mission to make Hannah understand who she really is.

In the past when Hannah would ask about Helen's life, she would make up beautiful and brilliant stories about a wonderful well-adjusted life. These lies now eat at Helen and she's now determined to make it right. To document all the happenings of her past and let Hannah know the truth.

Author Laura Weiss created characters with such depth and realism that I literally forgot about everything else. I was suddenly lost in their world and needed to know all I could about each one. There were many times when I though I knew what was going to happen and to my surprise, it was not at all the way I thought it would be. Rich in emotion and dialogue, Weiss creates a story that will keep you thinking long after the book has ended. I'm still thinking about Hannah and Helen.

I laughed and I cried and then I cried some more. "How it Ends" would make the PERFECT book club read. There is so much to discuss. I would definitely not categorize this story as a 'light' or 'beach' read and it's just long enough to not make the story too taxing on the reader. You'll love "How It Ends" from page one to page 304.

I haven't read a story this beautifully told in a very long time. Heartwarming and Heartbreaking all inn one. This novel is about 'true' love, what it means and everything that comes along with it. I absolutely loved "How It Ends". Highly recommended!

That's all for now...Happy Reading!

Summer Of Two Wishes Blog Tour & Giveaway!!

Book: Summer of Two Wishes
By Julia London
Publisher: Pocket Star (Simon and Schuster)
Available in: Mass Market Paperback
Release Date: August 18, 2009

Pages: 432
Language: English
Buy the book at Amazon

My Royal Rating: Photobucket

First and foremost, I'd like to make a public apology to both author Julia London and Sara Reidy of Pocket Star (a division of S&S) . I was sent this wonderful copy of "Summer of Two Wishes" by Sara for this tour and my post was supposed to be up first thing this morning. I wasn't feeling well enough to post last night and I forgot to make it an "automatic post" and therefore missed having it up on time. It's still the correct day, just a little later. So, to Ms. London and Sara, I apologize profusely! Sometimes illness can be cruel and really not care. We, as human beings, feel differently (and I am extremely thankful for that). With that said, on with the tour for "SUMMER OF TWO WISHES" by Julia London!

Synopsis:

Who's Wife Is She?

Macy Lockhart's life shattered in a moment with the news that her husband, Finn -- serving in the military overseas -- has been killed in the line of duty. Their ardent and devoted marriage is over, leaving Macy alone, empty, directionless. But while she tries to sustain herself with memories of Finn, the quiet, strong man who made her and their small Texas ranch the center of his life, it is wealthy Wyatt Clark who slowly brings joy back into her life. Her love for Wyatt may be less romantic than the breathless passion she'd once shared with Finn, but she vows to cherish him, and their marriage is happy and as solid as a rock. Until the day that Finn, miraculously spared from death, returns home to claim his bride....
How can a woman choose between the two men she loves? And how will she make the right choice -- for herself and everyone involved? In a deeply moving, passionate novel, New York Times bestselling author Julia London illuminates the questions hidden in a woman's heart.

My Thoughts:

Miracles can happen, and do...

Wow! I wish I could just leave it at that...that's all I kept thinking through the entire novel. But, if you know me, then you know I would never leave it at just "wow".... (In case you don't know, I'm a talker and not in a little way)!

So, here's the situation, to Macy Lockheart, there's no one in the world she loves more than her husband Finn. She lives for him, he's the very air she breathes and they have the *Perfect* marriage. Together, they live in Cedar Springs and run a horse ranch and this means not only the perfect marriage, but the perfect life to go with it. Macy and Finn couldn't be any happier than they are when they're together.

But when Finn enlists in the military, after Macy begging him not to do so, she soon finds herself alone and missing her husband greatly. Awaiting for his return, she's greeted at the door with his dog tags and sympathetic apologies. There was evidence that he was killed in Afghanistan. Suddenly her entire wold comes crashing down and Macy feels she no longer has much to live for. She's in a deep depression and it's going to take something or someone should I say, to bring her out.

Enter after Wyatt Clark - a strong, self-confident and very well off man. As he helps her regain her strength and life of promise, they fall in love and are soon exchanging vows. With her life back on track, and a new husband that can give her any thing, the unthinkable is about to happen.

After being married for only seven months and preparing for a charity function, Macy is about to get more shocking news. It seems that Finn is not dead, in fact, for the past three years, he has been held captive by the Taliban and just made his way back to the coalition troops after escaping! That's right, he's ALIVE, and after three years of grieving Macy can't believe what she's now found true. He one ... no make that FIRST true love is alive and she's elated ... but how to tell Wyatt? And who will she choose? How could she ever choose?

Author Julia London does a marvelous job with this love triangle. Each character has depth and gives meaning to the story. A heart-breaking and romantic tale that's not to be missed! You'll be turning pages until late in the evening following the lives of these three characters! Julia's prose is magical and beautifully written. So be sure to pick up "Summer of Two Wishes" and a big package of tissues as well!

About the Author:

Julia London

Here's where I usually insert the author's bio...but I found something much better on Julia's site...her "unofficial Bio" from her web site!

Okay, here is the real scoop on Julia London: the official bio looks nothing like who I think is the real me. The unofficial truth is that I was born and raised in rural west Texas. I was a fat baby and typical little girl with Barbies, bikes, and an overactive imagination. I know that I loved to make up stories from a time I can scarcely remember (because my mom has a story I wrote in the first grade, which featured me in an episode of Wagon Train), and I know that I always loved books.

I remember going to the library. It was in an old house and it was very cool inside and smelled like old books and all the children’s books were on lower shelves for easy access by little hands. I read all the usual stuff: Nancy Drew, Little House on the Prairie, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women… Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Sex but Were Afraid to Ask (by then I was fifteen or sixteen and was afraid to ask).

In my early teens, I began to dream of great adventure and hunky guys and filled notebooks with stories of a girl who looked and talked like me and was constantly caught up in adventure and peril. She always landed in the arms of hunky guys who happened to resemble a few of my favorite TV stars. Hey, I’m not ashamed to admit it: Starsky and Hutch, Alias Smith and Jones, and yes, even Keith Partridge.

I went to college, I got a job, and when I got a little older, I began to live the real adventures of my life. I traveled to far-flung places and tried things I never thought I’d try. I had good jobs with the federal government and eventually ended up working in the White House, and then later, I came back to Texas and worked as a public administrator until I could take politics no more.

That’s when I decided to turn my penchant for making up stories into books, and I’ll be damned if an agent and a publisher didn’t want to publish my daydreams. I have been a lucky, lucky girl.

Photobucket

I look back at my life and mark the passage of time by standard measures: bad hair and bad style sense. Or, I can pinpoint where I was and what I was doing in my life by the sports I tried. Not all of them took, but I discovered I was best at tennis (back in the day), golf (except when it’s too hot, and its always too hot in Texas) and wogging (sort of a half-walk, half-jog. Extremely ugly in appearance, but gets the job done), which I do only moderately well.

Along the way I fell in love with a few good dogs and a few good men, and found the ones I want to keep forever.

Sure, there have been those few occasions I might have drank too much and did some things I wish I hadn’t, but overall, I have no regrets. I’ve never wanted for anything except the perfect purse (the search continues). I have been a lucky, lucky girl.

The unofficial truth is that I’ve had two successful careers. I’ve been blessed with a wonderful family and I’ve been lucky in love and work and play. I love my life, I love what I do. I love the people and animals that surround me and I am eager to see what the next half of my life brings.

Now that is a bio that looks like me.

I highly recommend this book to any true lover of a good romance novel. This one still has me thinking about the characters days later.

Thanks to Sara at Simon and Schuster, I'm able to giveaway a copy of "Summer of Two Wishes" to one VERY lucky reader. Interested? Ok! Here's what to do.

Damas, Dramas and Ana Ruiz Blog Tour & Giveaway!!

Damas, Dramas and Ana Ruiz: A Quinceañera Club Novel
By: Belinda Acosta
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Pages: 336 Pages
Available: August 11, 2009

My Rating: 4.5 Tiaras! Photobucket

Synopsis:

All Ana Ruiz wanted was to have a traditional quinceañera for her daughter, Carmen. She wanted a nice way to mark this milestone year in her daughter's life. But Carmen was not interested in celebrating. Hurt and bitter over her father Esteban's departure, she blamed Ana for destroying their happy family, as did everyone else. A good man is hard to find, especially at your age Ana was told. Why not forgive his one indiscretion? Despite everything, Ana didn't want to tarnish Carmen's childlike devotion to her beloved father. But Ana knows that growing up sometimes means facing hard truths. In the end, Ana discovers that if she's going to teach Carmen anything about what it means to be a woman, it will take more than simply a fancy party to do it...

"Belinda Acosta's Damas, Dramas, and Ana Ruiz delivers all its title promises and more: it's a book about damas of all ages, from teenage girls to the struggling mothers of those teenage girls; it's packed with drama so you don't want to stop reading; it's a novel that deeply and honestly tells the story of Ana Ruiz, her own coming of age as a woman and as a mother. Belinda Acosta is up to all of the challenges of such a rich panorama of characters and events. She's sassy, she's smart, she makes it look easy! But it takes a lot of hard work and a pile of talent to write such an engaging, touching book. A wonderful quinceañera of a novel!" --- Julia Alvarez, author of
Once Upon a Quinceañera: Coming of Age in the USA and Return to Sender"

Lively and perceptive... Acosta empathically captures the innermost feelings of her characters."--- Booklist

My thoughts:

What's a quinceañera? Before opening the book, that's something I needed to know! Here's what I found; It's a celebration or coming-of-age party held on a girl's fifteenth birthday that typically begins with a religious ceremony. This ceremony is usually a good way for the family to bond with the girl turning 15 (especially the mother).

When I first picked up Damas, Dramas and Ana Ruiz, I expected a humorous beach-type read with little sustenance. But, to my delight, I couldn't have been more wrong! Belinda Acosta does a wonderful job weaving a story of a heart-broken daughter who misses her father's love and a mother that will do anything to gain her daughter's heart back! Belinda uses a unique mixture of humor and narrative point of view to get the messages across to her readers. Which worked for me one hundred percent!

Carmen can only see all the goodness in her father and furthermore, she blames her fully for their immediate separation! A daddy's girl through-and-through she has only starry-eyed notions of just what type of a man he is. Her mother and father, Ana and Esteban Ruiz cannot even hold a civilized conversation, never mind connecting to try and figure out if and how the marriage is going to work! And while Carmen refuses to talk to her mother, Ana is determined to throw Carmen a beautiful Quinceañera with the hopes of bringing them closer together and strengthening their bond.

Most of the story is centered around Ana and her need to regain her own self-confidence along with her daughters love. Ana's Son Diego and her niece Bianca both are there to help with the planning. While Carmen shows her childish, immature and demanding self in this story, her brother is just the opposite. Diego is caring and compassionate and tries to help his mother with whatever she needs. Bianca's got her own mother/daughter issues. Her mother is mentally ill and therefore can't be there for her while she's growing up. Each one of these character's were so well developed that I felt as though I got to know each and every one of them. I cared about what happened to them. I laughed with them and I felt their pain. To me, that's one of the main things that makes a story a success.

I believe this book would make a fantastic book club read (and you can even find a RGG here)! There is so many aspects of this story you could discuss. Also, there are the different cultural aspects of the book that helped me learn a whole lot about a subject I didn't know much about to begin with. I was so angry at times with Ana for not telling her daughter the truth about her father. But, as a mother myself, I could see the struggle she had with trying to protect her daughter from all that wasn't "perfect" in the family. There are already so many different types of things that teen girls have to worry about while entering womanhood. Why add more stress?

Belinda has written a coming of age story and the issues that affect so many of us and not just Spanish families. You could feel the stress in the written word and just how strong the bond of love is between the Ruiz family. This story will at times tug at your heart-strings and at other times laugh out loud! I highly recommend this book and note Ms. Acosta an author to watch!
